Harvest update 8/14

Our potato patch....it's a sad site, but there are potatoes under there. We had flame them as they had blight AND the Colorado potato beetles...but the potatoes will stay there until we the frost. They will not be as big as they could have been, but at least they're safe underground! If you're in the mood for some potatoes, find a dead plant and dig some up!

The sweet corn is delicious. I'm eating an ear raw as I type this. No need to cook! Unless you like warm corn. Pick the ears whose silks have turned brown and are of substantial size.

Zucchini and summer squash galore. The smaller ones are less pithy and more delicious!

The first round of broccoli is nearing it's end, but the stalk will keep shooting out stalks that, though never will reach the size of a full head, is equally as delicious. Harvest these shoots for a treat!

Cucumbers cucumbers and cucumbers. We have miniature white cucumbers (which are actually yellow) and the standard American slicing cucumber.

Kale: enough said. There will always be enough kale. Dino kale, redbor, and winterbor kale.

THE FIRST TOMATO OF THE SEASON! This is only the beginning. They're off to a late start, but enjoy!

Beets are ready for harvest, pick the bigger ones to thin out the patch!

Green, yellow, and purple (which turn green when you cook them) beans. The first succession is nearing the end of it's reign, but don't worry, we have another succession on it's way.

The goats are helping us weed near the pumpkin patch.

KALE

These mini trees are awesome, first and last of the season to harvest. Pick from the bottom up, and make sure you leave enough ‘solar panels’ so the plant can continue living. Even if you don’t end up keeping the leaves from near the bottom, do the plant a favor and pluck them any way so it doesn’t suck energy from the rest of the plant. You can leave these leafs near the base as a good mulch. Please make sure you pluck them at the base of the branch as not to leave a ‘bench’ that has the potential to collect bacteria and harm the plant.

RED LETTUCE

Yum! Because of the slower start to the season, we only have enough for one head per share for now, but we promise much more later. Cut at the base of the head.

ENDIVE
Harvest these from the outside in, keeping enough leaves on to keep the plant alive. Take a bag's worth and mix with the other greens!

SPICY MICRO GREENS

Harvest these at the base with a serated knife from the trailer shed. The flea beetles got to them first, but they still taste the same. We chose not to put any gunk on them to control the beetles because we knew we’d be eating them soon. Feel free to take a few handfuls and add them to a salad for a good kick!

KOHLRABI

These space ships can be plucked straight from the ground. Tear off the leaves at the base of the stalk and throw them in the mulch. Enjoy the bulbs cut up raw or cooked. Great in a salad!

ONIONS

Most of these are meant for the fall harvest when they’re nice and big, but feel free to take a few for now. Use the stalk and the bulb both. Take from the row closest to the corn, and when those are gone, move on to the second row.

TASKS:

NEW ADDITION
The whiteboard has finally be installed! Please check in here first to see what tasks need to be done. We'll keep this up to date. Please also jot down what you did so we don't waste time guessing what was done! Thanks in advance for helping us keep this endeavor organized.

The flower bed can be weeded if want

...the potato patch...enough said. Fill up some red buckets with weeds from between the rows and feed them to the animals! They'll love you.
